Cyber Essentials Readiness: A Practical SME Checklist
A practical starting point for organisations preparing for Cyber Essentials without turning certification into a box-ticking exercise.
Know what is in scope
Document devices, users, cloud services, internet-facing systems and business locations. Unclear scope creates gaps and slows evidence gathering.
Control access
Remove unused accounts, apply multi-factor authentication and separate administrative access from everyday user accounts.
Keep systems supported
Unsupported software and unpatched devices create avoidable exposure. Establish ownership for updates and evidence that critical patches are deployed promptly.
Protect devices and services
Use properly configured firewalls, endpoint protection and secure device settings. Default passwords and unnecessary services should be removed.
Prepare evidence
Policies must match reality. Gather screenshots, configuration exports and asset records while remediation work is completed rather than at the last moment.
